Ten years ago I moved away from Cape Cod, and as such, surrendered my full time status. Now, ten years later, I find myself traveling back to the Cape as often as I can to visit friends and family, and just recently I can add one more reason to the list. Last Saturday night friends and I went to dinner at a wonderful restaurant, ‘The Wicked Oyster’, located in Wellfleet Massachusetts. You will not want to miss the eclectic and delicious menu.
Chef/Owner Eric Jansen runs a tasty ship. The menu features plenty of fresh local seafood, certified Angus steaks, a plentiful rack of lamb, and the tastiest oysters on the half shell I have ever had, not to mention perfectly cooked calamari. As a matter of fact, the calamari was in a class all by itself. The tender, sweet rings were the highlight of my perfectly cooked Seafood Paella. The Wicked Oyster is a refreshing break from the age-old local standbys. In addition to a fresh and well-rounded menu, the wine list adds an element of affordable completeness. Chef Eric loves wine, and his carefully selected wine list of one hundred plus reasonably priced wines allows each diner to experience the best he has to offer. I have always admired people who share Eric’s philosophy about serving wine in a restaurant: keep the prices reasonable and they will come.
After my meal, I had a chance to speak with Eric about his recipes and wine list. I was impressed with his dedication and esprit de corp. He is committed to his art and it shows in his cooking, the atmosphere of the restaurant, the wine list, and his obvious investment in the local community. Albeit almost the off-season, the restaurant was still filled to capacity with a lively mix of locals and visitors. Everyone was obviously enjoying themselves, a full house of happy souls all filled with good food and wine eagerly awaiting that evening’s entertainment. After the dinner service is complete, at least on Saturdays, the dining room transforms into center stage, featuring local bands, and coaxing out the dancing bug in everyone there.
I was extremely impressed and I highly recommend the Wicked Oyster. I hope that Chef Eric will continue to change things up and offer some of the best food past the bridge and beyond. I am truly looking forward to my next visit.
