Limiting Your Stockpile of Everyday Drinkers

The other day a good friend told me that, "There will always be something good to drink at the liquor store." We were talking about how it takes effort to avoid accumulating too many every day drinkers in a private wine collection. If you are not careful with your wine purchases, you can quickly end up with a cellar filled with inexpensive, everyday stuff. There is a real draw to buying a case here and a case there when the juice is good and the price is right. This tends to happen during Saturday tastings at your local wine shop. You have an opportunity to taste the wine and they are usually on sale that day, so you pick up 6-7 bottles. A couple of months of this ritual and you will have a cellar filled with wines that will not mature past a 2-3 years. As I have always said, the secret to wine collection is balance. When you are out shopping for wine, try to mix in some collectable bottles with your purchase of everyday drinkers. Have a cellar blueprint and stick with it. Review your blueprint before you go to the wine shop and buy what you need to continue your plan. Try to avoid the urge to stockpile everyday drinkers and let the liquor store be your stockpile of everyday wine.
